Summer Term Newsletter
Letter from the Headteacher
It is hard to believe that Bank View High School is approaching its second birthday. The progress and success of the school was clearly tested by Ofsted in February this year. The outcome: ‘A good school with outstanding features’ is a testament to all the hard work and effort from staff and pupils. Without the excellent levels of support the school receives from parents, this achievement would have been possible.
The school continues to go from strength to strength with Bank View being awarded the National Investors in People status, Basic Skills Award and Dyslexia Friendly Schools Award.
May I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and wish you a happy summer break.
Best wishes.
I R WRIGHT
Sad Farewells
On a sadder note, we have two teachers leaving the school at the end of this term. Mrs Garrette is retiring after 23 years of service and Mr Rawsthorne is taking up a new post as Assistant SENCO at Alsop High School.
Both teachers have made a positive impact on the lives of many young people at Bank View High School as well as many other pupils in other schools due to their Outreach work. The school would like to wish them both all the best for the future.
Also Mr Chisholm, PE Teacher has been with us on long term supply for the past year, he is also leaving us at the end of this term. We also wish him all the best for the future.
Lost Property - North Site
There are quite a number of school coats, jumpers etc here in the school, all with no name in. Could you please check if your child is missing any items.
We do stress that all pupils clothing etc should be clearly marked with their name
Bingo Night – North Site
There was an excellent turnout for the Bingo Night which held on 21 May.
We would like to especially thank Lorna Thompson (sister of one of our pupils) who joined our pupils at Barden Towers and was sponsored to walk
6 miles with our pupils and raised a £150.00. This was presented to staff on the Bingo Night.Well done Lorna and thank you.
Tall Ships
– South SiteTwo pupils have been invited to go on board a tall ship in Liverpool in the near future. I am sure this will be a wonderful opportunity for the pupils to see how a tall ship functions. There will be a chance to meet the crew as well, enjoy it!!
First Aid Competion - North Site
Bank View High School – North – First Aid Team are proud to announce that they are the WINNERS of the St John’s Ambulance Schools Competition which took place on Saturday, 14 June 2008 at the Headquarters in Southport. We all had a fantastic day and came back to school with some lovely trophies which are now in our display cabinet.
Everyone worked very hard and was commended by St John’s Ambulance for their wonderful techniques.
Crime and Consequences Short Film - South Site
Since March of this year, a number of our pupils have been working to produce a video together with Merseyside Police and First Take.
Anna Levin of First Take taught the children how to use all the equipment and the school would like to thank her for her time and also for working with the children.
The film examines the consequence of being involved with crime at a young age and includes a dramatisation by pupils of a stabbing incident, as well as interviews, conducted by pupils, with victims of crime, people who have been to prison and members of the law enforcement and youth support agencies.
Pupils had a great time making this film and now have a new perspective on crime and consequences.
Merseyside Police have requested to use the film as part of their school’s work.
Barden Tower - North Site
Year 13 travelled North near Skipton for a residential at Barden Tower Bunk Barn earlier. The week was packed with activities such as swimming, museum visit and even a visit down a coal mine.
All had a great time.
Year 7 vistied Barden Tower during July and all the pupils enjoyed their residential trip.
Capital of Culture - South Site
Bank View South was involved in the Generation 21 Art project. They designed a school for the future and from this design
produced pictures, poems and a 3D model with the help of local artist, Alex Carina, over a period of 7 weeks.
On 4 July, Sarah Hogarth, Creative Schools Programme Officer, came into school to hand out awards to the 13 pupils involved, who each received a commemorative plaque. Well done to all who took part.
The design for the school of the future was very imaginative, with swimming pools, sports grounds, and building on the shoreline, half in and half out of the water (pupils fancied being able to look out of the window and see dolphins and sharks)
Hope College Residential Trip – Both Sites

Finally!! – South Site
Goodbye and good luck to all our leavers who left on 30 June. The leavers assembly was most enjoyable and few tears were passed by staff. They then had a most enjoyable and pleasant meal at Frankie & Benny’s in Edge Lane. Well done to them, all who achieved the best results ever this year for our Entry Level exams.
Nine of our leavers also attended the Compact Graduation Ceremony at the Philharmonic Hall for their contribution and improvement in their attendance and working towards goals for their skills for employment.
Superlambanana
Check out Ms Bower’s Superlambanana outside the Catholic Cathedral in town!!
Apart from being the RE teacher on the North Site, she is also a practicing artist. Her superlambanana design is like a butcher’s diagram, with each of the 55 sections allocated to individuals or organisations in Liverpool. (People could email in their nominations).
